A privately-owned scientific instrument company designing and manufacturing a range of instrumentation are looking for a Mechanical Development Engineer to join their growing R&D team near Epsom in Surrey. Their products are used for research in many universities and by some of the world's most innovative scientific organisations.
Reporting to the Development Team Leader you will be responsible for carrying out the duties within the R&D department, including new product designs, creating and modifying drawings, prototyping, testing, creating or updating engineering documentation including the central operating system (NAV), completing ECR's, and implementing process improvements. The role may include some machining or 3D printing of parts to prove out a design before moving to the next stage. Responsible for modifying existing products or processes to increase efficiency, performance & quality.
This role is varied but has the freedom for an individual to see the design from inception through to production with a high degree of individual input.
Qualifications / skills required:
Have a mechanical engineering qualification to at least degree level.
At least 2-3 years professional experience with a good understanding of complex product structures, hard working, methodical, self-motivated and with a good eye for detail.
You will have a robust understanding of design for manufacturing and work efficiently in our R&D team with collaboration across all departments.
Have strong communication skills to work professionally with customers, suppliers and colleagues.
Ideally some experience in a relevant field such as research and analytical instrument design.
Experience using 3D CAD software, ideally Solid Edge, and be able to produce 2D technical drawings.
Experience working with Bills of Materials within an electronic manufacturing system (ERP) would be advantageous.
Some practical / industry experience, with an understanding of R & D project lifecycle practices
Some knowledge of materials under high and low temperatures, working with CE and ROHS requirements.
Background and an interest in small mechanisms and the close relationship between design and manufacturing.
Maybe is a hobbyist with a general interest in anything mechanical.
Communication skills are a must, as excellent team and customer liaison is a key factor within the company.
